I LOVE IT! But is it "In"? It didn't take long to just expect this question from each and every design client...anxious about how their selections would be perceived by others. It does seem, at times, that we live in a constant state of judgment. Yet, because of the internet and social media platforms, we also get to be a part of a diverse, much larger world view... no matter who we are or where we choose to work and live.
To say we have "come a long way" since cave paintings adorned our abodes would be a gross understatement. But at the same time, not entirely accurate.
Today's modern world affords us a near endless supply of options, suited to an ever expanding list of design styles. If you dream it, love it, can afford it, can't live without it... it is yours! When early humans began painting their cave walls, they lacked options, but none of the heart. They painted what they felt, what they experienced, and what they loved.
Before the internet, interior design was mostly restricted to what you could acquire at local stores and with local artisans. Technology has afforded us an incredible opportunity to take our ideas to new heights and to source unique items with ease. It has allowed a larger palette, and therefore more confidence to try new things and put "ourselves" on display.
There will forever be trends, fads, and viral must-haves. These items will come and go quicker than any one person can keep up. So ask yourself, "How do I personally feel about them?"
Not every well designed home gets on a magazine cover. If it accomplishes all the feels, all the function, and tells a story for those that live there.... well, I believe it should!
My response back to the original question...."Does it matter?"
Exceptional design is uniquely personal to each and every individual and home. Hire a designer who knows how to capture that essence (that heart) and bring it full circle...providing a truly liveable space with eye catching cohesion!
